bye DELL hello macbook

about a year or more now, my dell inspiron 300m died. i have been using my ancient desktop in the lapse, but missed the joys of a laptop… hello macbook

so i really loved my dell, it was so light and powerful, and really gave me no problems… then one day …

the power adapter connector on the motherboard, got mangled and when i forced (_idiot_) the power cord in i saw smoke … my heart dropped to the floor… i immediately called dell … $250 to send it in … even if they do nothing, and $500 for motherboard replacement… screw that

let me sidetrack here a second … i have always had dell as long as i have had a computer… their price seems to beat all… and quality and service was excellent… but in the last 4 years the quality of both their computers have gone down… and even worse is the quality of their support… ABYSMAL would be a compliment… with my previous experience i almost did not buy the inspiron 300m, but it was the price tag that got me….

ok, now that i got that off my back, where was i… oh yeah screw that ... so i went unto ebay … and found a motherboard that i won for a $60 bid… the seller did state that he had not tested so doesn’t know if it worked … when the package arrived, i got my computer geek friend to install… and said to say it didn’t work…

so after laying dormant for a year (this site too) ... checking ebay occasionally … the intel macs started to catch my eye… i have been using macs at work now for what seems like an eternity, so why not buy one. software was the answer

but, eventually i just pulled the trigger when then intel 2 core duo came out … i chose macbook over pro, because i don’t need the extra juice and wanted a light laptop.

so far so good, but it is good to note that this thing is a beast in weight compared to my inspiron, and when you look on the specs not much lighter than the pro. i was dissappointed the cord came as white and not black. apple really should do better on their warranty… not matter how much faith people have in MACS ... they pretty much force you into getting applecare.

well that’s all for now… i am sure the more i use it the more i will have to report.

what they saidwho said it

I’m in the same boat; my Toshiba has died, though in my case it seems due to some laptop home care I tried to perform (article coming on that soon), so I’m going for a Mac too, my first, probably MacBook Pro. Lots of good feedback provided here.

Damn, they are spendy though, and I’ve heard all the arguments but I’m just not convinced the price is justifiable outside of simple fashion statement alone. I mean let’s be real, Mac is not exactly trouble-free; like you point out, there’s a reason you need that extra coverage, or at least should have it to be on the safe side. But I’ll give one a whirl and we’ll see if I catch the bug…the good kind.

Yeah, I guess I’m trying to bait you back into the forum. ;)

Well can’t really say I have anything bad to say about MACs besides the obvious cost and the silly warranty coverage. It really is a great little machine… and having UNIX as a back-end is pretty nice … made installing MySQL and PHP ... to test TxP locally was super easy.

I have been using MACs at work now for a long time, so not really a stretch for me. And why I finally pulled the trigger, is that it can run both… but really and truly I could have gotten a PC and been ok. I will be still looking for that motherboard…

I’m a 17” PowerBook guy myself – can’t tell you how good it is to NOT be using a PC. I’d never go back.

btw everybody, language nazi time: it’s a “Mac,” not a “MAC” – it’s not an acronym.

Peace through punctuation!

Hey David … ahh good to see the language Nazi out … it’s a great thing that my punctuation and spelling is atrocious … so i’ll add Macintosh as MAC to the list of bad habits ;) ... no matter what i still love my MAC =)
